Spring 2026 5K Buddy FAQ

KGPCo Girls on the Run Minnesota 5K weekend is almost here! Below, you'll find information on 5K buddies, who play an important role in ensuring our event is joyful, safe, and celebratory. We can't wait to see you Saturday, May 30 in the Twin Cities or Sunday, May 31 in Rochester or Duluth!

What are 5K Buddies?

Every girl needs a registered 5K Buddy (an adult 18+) to run/walk with her. With so many people at the event, 5K Buddies are there for safety purposes, as well as to offer encouragement and support.

Who can be a 5K Buddy?

5K Buddies can be parents, relatives, teachers, friends – any trusted adult. 5K Buddies (and any other family/friends) must register online here. Pay-what-you-can option is available and early registration is preferred.

Do I need to sign up to be a 5K Buddy?

Yes! Unless you are a Coach (see the question below!), 5K Buddies (and any other family/friends) must register online here. Pay-what-you-can option is available and early registration is preferred.

Can Coaches be 5K Buddies?

Yes! Just make sure another coach is available to help manage the team. Coaches and participants are automatically registered for the 5K, so there is no additional action needed.

I am a parent/guardian. Can I be a 5K Buddy for my GOTR/H&S participant?

Yes! This is encouraged! This is a great way to accomplish a goal together.

Can we sign up our whole family to be our girl's 5K Buddy?

Yes! Every kid needs at least 1 adult 18+ to be their official 5K Buddy, but they are welcome to have as many folks run and cheer them on as you'd like! Each person needs to register separately, but everybody can list their GOTR family member.

Can an older sibling be a 5K Buddy?

If the sibling is 18 years or older, YES! If they are under 18, they are welcome to join the 5K and run with her, but that would be in addition to her adult 5K Buddy, not in place of it. All 5K Buddies and other family/friends must register online here.

When should 5K Buddies arrive at the 5K?

What about the weather?

This is an important day for our girls and the 5K will be held rain or shine. Should outside conditions become unsafe, we will notify participants through text, email and social media as soon as possible, and you can also visit our Facebook and Instagram for updates.

What is a “happy pace” and how can I be supportive as a 5K Buddy?

This is a non-competitive event and we encourage everyone to go their “happy pace.” To keep the course clear for all, we ask slower runners and walkers to stay to the right, leaving room for other participants to pass.

Can I be the 5K Buddy for two girls?

In a pinch, yes! However, the 1-1 ratio is really special as you encourage and support one another throughout the 5K.

I'm a coach and have a bunch of friends that can be 5K Buddies for kids on my team. Is that ok?

No. While we love that you are helping your participants, a 5K Buddy is a person the girl already knows and trusts.

I'm not a runner! Can I still be a 5K Buddy?

Of course! Keep in mind, however, that you and the GOTR participant should generally have the same pace, so if you are partnering with someone who is ready to sprint the whole way, keep that in mind so it’s a positive and safe experience for both of you.

Can I bring my pet?

No, please leave your pets at home and plan to cuddle up with them after the 5K!

Are strollers okay?

Yes, strollers are welcome. We ask that anyone with a stroller starts at the back of the pack for safety.
